The select code, also known as a serial number, is a unique alphanumeric string that identifies each EPG/Prevue piece of hardware. When commands are sent out to the guide machines, they are addressed by select code. Some commands use asterisks as wildcard characters in the serial numbers so that, for example, the time or a system update can be sent out to all machines at once.
